Henry O. Tanner (1859 – 1937) was an African-American painter who gained international acclaim when he moved to Paris, France. He is best known for his landscape and biblically themed paintings. His most famous painting is called The Banjo Lesson and features a dark color palette. Mr. Tanner visited Tangier, Morocco, and used a much lighter color palette. The Gateway, Tangier is the inspiration for this colorway as it features the lighter palette of indigos and turquoise which became known as the “Tanner blues”
